Biodesign Australia is now taking applications from Perth and Adelaide’s best and brightest for an opportunity to create the next big thing in medical devices and technologies. From the 12th of March 2018, aspiring entrepreneurs will be able to express interest through the newly launched Biodesign Australia website.

The SPARK Co-Lab Design course was previously run in 2016 and again in 2017, with support from Accelerating Australia. Following the success of the first two rounds of the Design Course, along with other Accelerating Australia activities such as the CERI Entrepreneurship courses, MTPConnect generously committed $1M of funding (matched with another $1M from consortium members) allowing Accelerating Australia to roll out their courses nationally, beginning with the Adelaide Biodesign course in April 2018. The Perth Biodesign course will begin in June 2018 and will be run as a partnership between Accelerating Australia and SPARK Co-Lab.

In this course we build teams from multidisciplinary backgrounds (engineering, clinical, scientific and business) and challenge them to identify unmet clinical needs, invent a medical device solution, develop intellectual property, build a prototype and establish the business strategies required for success.

The program runs over six months with two-hour lectures and mentoring weekly. It is not for the faint hearted – to get real results you will have to roll up your sleeves outside of lecturing time. The course is suited to students near the end of their studies or to early career professionals.

Last year’s course saw six teams of five, including surgeons, allied health professionals, engineers, students, senior scientists, business managers, and serial entrepreneurs, discover over 400 unmet needs in their clinical observations. Projects from last years’ teams included addressing the management of irritable bowel disease, detecting early infections in orthopedic implants and diagnostic tools for developmental coordination disorders.

If you are interested in applying, expressions of interest can be made for Perth Biodesign here or Adelaide Biodesign here and an application form will be sent to you directly. You can also attend one of our information sessions if you would like to find out more.
